Beginnings

We all know the stories of how creative people get into the business of creating for a living, but how did they start using their imaginations in the first place? On the Beginnings podcast, writer and performer Andy Beckerman asks well-known and up-and-coming comedians, musicians, writers and artists about their earliest creative acts and about other formative childhood experiences.

It's the dawn of a new era for Beginnings, and on today's show we talk to writer and musician David Grubbs. Starting in Louisville, Kentucky with the bands Squirrel Bait and Bastro, David has since released seven albums with Gastr del Sol, 12 full-length solo albums and has appeared on more than 150 records including recordings by Tony Conrad, Pauline Oliveros, Matmos, Will Oldham, the Red Krayola. David also has a PhD in English and currently holds a position at Brooklyn College. His most recent album The Plain Where the Palace Stood was released earlier this year on Drag City.

Early in June, after walking 10 blocks in the wrong direction in 90 degree weather, Andy sat down with David in his Brooklyn apartment to talk about Senagalese music, the 4th wall in music performance, Hi-Q/Quiz Bowl, rationality and religious feeling, academic axe-grinding, and getting over yourself.
