Beginnings

We all know the stories of how creative people get into the business of creating for a living, but how did they start using their imaginations in the first place? On the Beginnings podcast, writer and performer Andy Beckerman asks well-known and up-and-coming comedians, musicians, writers and artists about their earliest creative acts and about other formative childhood experiences.

On today's show we talk to Joseph Fink and Jeffrey Cranor, the writers and creators of the wonderful scripted podcast Welcome to Night Vale. Structured in the style of a local small town radio show, Welcome to Night Vale is a like Our Town written by Lovecraft and David Lynch.

A few weeks ago, Jeffrey and Joseph came over to Andy's Harlem apartment and transformed Beginnings into The Fringecast for a bit and then Food Opinions with Joseph Fink. We also discuss the Tommy Westphal universe, The Traveler, Dave Barry, vegetarianism and more! Plus, in the epilogue, I chat with stand-up Joe Stanton about reading sci-fi as a child.

Check out our new website for Beginnings, subscribe on iTunes and see some live dates: Andy will be in conversation with J.J. Sedelmaier on July 30th at UCB East, and the next live episode will be August 6th with Jim Norton, Bonnie McFarlane, Eric Drysdale (Colbert Report) and musical guest ARMS!
